Resident Scott Billings wears several hats in public safety

Hanson resident Scott Billings, a communications lieutenant at the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Department, wears several hats and his completion of a 40-hour course,  “COMT/All-Hazards Communications Technician” will be beneficial in all his positions.

Billings works part-time as a call firefighter for the town of Hanson and a support tech for the Fire Marshals Office Special Operations Unit, in addition to his full-time position as a communications lieutenant at the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Department. He joined the Sheriff’s Office in 1986 and was promoted to lieutenant in 2003.

 
Repainting brightens mural

A small group gathered over the last three weekends to retouch the mural on the side of Ferry’s Sunoco.  The mural, a tribute to servicemen and women, needed a bit of sprucing up as the sun has caused fading over the last several years.

Bonnie Saltzman along with her daughter, Vanessa Jolly, an Art Illustration major at UMass Dartmouth, were both on hand, painting and re-outlining the edges of each military symbol.

 
Gearing up for a new year

Whitman-Hanson schools opened their doors on Wednesday for what principals expect to be another great year.

Over the summer the custodial and maintenance staff were hard at work preparing the buildings for the upcoming school year.

 
Taking on a leadership role

Over the summer months Whitman-Hanson Regional High School junior Alex Winnett was taught leadership skills that he will be bringing back to his student council this year.

Winnett had been a member of the Whitman-Hanson Student Council for three years.

 
Superintendent gets down to business

It is a hot, late summer afternoon and Bruce Martin, the new associate superintendent of the Whitman DPW, is getting settled into his position.

The new superintendent was voted in by the DPW Board of Commissioners in June.  From July to mid-August, Martin worked closely with departing Superintendent Jack Lowe, learning the details and responsibilities of his new role.

 
Preparing for the Jimmy Fund Walk

Everyone’s story is a little bit different as to why they will be taking part in the 22nd annual Boston Marathon Jimmy Fund Walk on Sept. 14, but for eight Whitman participants the stories are all deeply personal.

The walk follows the course of the Boston Marathon from Hopkinton to Copley Square in Boston and has raised more than $66 million for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute since it started in 1989.

 
Post-rock band jams at fair

We Are Oceans isn’t the typical high school rock band.

The band made up of Nick Pagan on the keyboard and bass, drummer Bryan Counter, guitarist Justin Richner and guitarist Derek Gilbert, recently performed at the Marshfield Fair and the Summer Blast fundraiser for the Hanson schools.

How did you decide to apply for the adult services reference librarian position at the Whitman Public Library? I have always wanted to become a reference librarian and I just finished library school this spring.

 
First Baptist forced to pay tax

For the first time in over 188 years, the First Baptist Church of Whitman will be paying a tax bill.

In July the church received a quarterly tax bill for approximately $2,400 in their mail box and President Ed Winnett immediately contacted the assessor’s office.

 
Scout revamps ball field

Whitman-Hanson junior Zachary Connell decided to go big for his Eagle Scout project which is expected to take close to 2,000 hours to complete.

When Connell heard that the Whitman Baseball Association was looking at ways to improve the Conley School field, he spoke with Whitman Baseball President Chris Johnson to express his interest. After finding out that the project entailed removing briars, installing a fence and replacing two sheds, Connell went before the Whitman Baseball Association to receive approval.

 
District left with reserve surplus

WHRSD business manager Sharon Andrew presented the committee with a recap of last year’s budget.

 
Counsel answers mill questions

After voting to place the purchase of the Thomas Mill back on the Town Meeting warrant, the Board of Selectmen as well as members of the Community Preservation Commission heard the long-awaited response of town counsel regarding the water rights title that has delayed the purchase.
 
A visit with Conservation Dept.

The Express recently sat down with conservation agent Richard Vacca and administrative assistant Becky Nehiley and asked them about the daily duties in the department and some of the ongoing projects they are working on.

What do the conservation agent and the administrative assistant positions entail? Vacca: The conservation agent is the legal and technical advisor to the Conservation Commission. As the conservation agent, I also issue the permit application (notice of intent) and file the decision of the board. I go to the work sites and make inspections.

 
District continues to make tech advancements

This year, the Whitman-Hanson Regional School District Technology Center is working to improve costs and efficiencies for the upcoming school year.

Director of Technology Service Craig Finley said the district is trying to move services from print format to electronic media.

 
Football team ready for a fresh start in 2010

The Panthers have some big holes to fill from last season, but head coach Sean Clifford said his team is loaded with athleticism. There is stiff competition for several starting spots, which he hopes is going to bring out the best in his players.

With her senior year at Whitman-Hanson High School starting in a matter of weeks, Courtney Murphy will soon have to call it a summer at the Town River Yacht Club in Quincy, where she has been sailing and racing for nearly a decade.
 
Police station hits a bump

Construction for the new police station has hit a bump in the road, but is not expect to delay the project.

Last Thursday, the Plymouth County Sheriffs Department closed the gates on the Essex Street work site for the new police station. They then brought in flat bed trucks to remove the subcontractor’s equipment, Clerk of the Works Joe Homyak said.

 
Gas theft uncovered

Police filed charges against a Whitman couple for gas theft.

State Fire Marshal Stephen D. Coan, Whitman Fire Chief Timothy J. Grenno, and Whitman Police Chief Christine May-Stafford announced on Tuesday that a joint investigation uncovered a Whitman couple illegally storing and dispensing gasoline at their home at 20 Beaver Street in Whitman.
