| Five firsts and one record at all-leagues for Lady Panthers |

Juniors Abby and Rachael Baker helped run the Whitman-Hanson girls cross-country team to a state championship in the fall, and they are hoping they can do the same thing this winter with the indoor track team.
If Friday night was any indication, they should be very much in the mix on Thursday. Abby Baker broke the school record in the 1,000 meters while Rachael picked up a first place in the mile run as the girls track team grabbed five first places and 10 medals at the Patriot League Championship meet at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston. Baker had been closing in on Jill Alves’ record of 3 minutes, 4.08 seconds in the 1,000 all winter and finally ran in the record book with a first-place time of 3:03.52 on Friday to blow away the field. Baker ran the last two laps of the race virtually on her own after pulling away from the pack in the second lap and finishing 14 seconds ahead of second-place Julia Nee of Duxbury. “She’s been wanting that [record] for a long time,” head coach Mike Driscoll said. “So it was nice for her to finally get it.” Rachael Baker was equally dominant in the mile, finishing in 5:20.95 with the next runner, Katelyn Fougere of Scituate, crossing the finish line in 5:34.58. Fellow juniors Nicole Galewski and Samantha Richner also had good days for the Panthers. Richner cleared the high jump bar at 5 feet ahead of Maria Garman to take first place and later added a fifth place in the 55-meter hurdles. Galewski also took home two medals on the day with a fourth place in the 55-meter dash and first in the long jump with an indoor personal best of 16’9.75”. The Panthers’ other first place came in the relays, and was another impressive victory as the 4x800 team of Baker, Baker, Kelsey Tierney and Caroline Mulrey outran second place Hingham by 11 seconds. The Panthers also got medals from junior Danielle Spivak with a fifth place in the 55-meter dash and junior Mel Collins with a fifth place in the long jump. The Whitman-Hanson 4x200 team also took home a medal with their fifth place finish and the 4x400 team closed out the meet with a second place medal. “We had a bunch of personal bests all over the place, and that was good to see,” Driscoll said. “We’re such a young team and to continue to see them get better like that is fantastic.” The Panthers lone senior at the meet, Melissa Peck placed eighth in the 600 meters with a 1:47.65 time to qualify for the Division II championships, which will take place this Thursday at the Reggie Lewis Center. The Panthers are hoping they can ride their success from Friday night to a trophy at the meet, and Driscoll said the team has a good chance if they stay focused and healthy. “We’re expecting to do well,” he said. “If everything goes to plan, we’ll be very happy.” |
