The Whitman-Hanson boys track team closed out the Patriot League indoor season in style on Friday with 17 different Panthers earning medals at the All-Patriot League Championship at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston.
The Panthers placed third overall with 76 points, 2.5 points behind the second-place Pembroke Titans at a meet that showcased the Panthers’ strength and depth in the distance events. Senior Pat Ryan won the league championship in the two-mile run, pulling away from teammate Pat Mulrey in the second mile to win the race in 10 minutes, 23.75 seconds. Mulrey, who battled with Ryan for first in the early stages of the race, held on for an easy second place, crossing the finish line nearly 10 seconds in front of third place Phillip Martin of Pembroke. The Panthers were just as dominant in the distance relays, where the team of Ryan, Dylan Foureau, Mike Reimer and Nate Stephansky blew away the field in the 4x800 relays to take a second Patriot League championship by 14 seconds over the second-place Middleboro Sachems. Stephansky, Reimer and Foureau also took home individual medals at the meet with Reimer and Stephansky placing second and third in the 1,000 meters and Foureau placing third in a tight 600-meter race where the top three runners all finished within sixth-tenths of a second. The Panthers did not compete in the mile run, but picked up another distance medal in the freshman 1,000 courtesy of Brian Sheppard. While it was a good day for the distance runners, the Panthers’ sprinters, jumpers and throwers picked up their share of medals. Senior Anthony Iannone jumped from seventh place in the qualifying run of the 55-meter hurdles to place fifth in the finals while Dom Cacciatore placed fourth in the 55-meter dash before both teams with Paul Kennedy and Luke Laubacher to take second in the 4x400 relay. Junior Yannik Blanke and senior Cory Paquette placed fifth and sixth in the 300 meter while Ian MacDonald placed third in the shot put with a toss of 47 feet, 11.75 inches. Senior Brian Chapman also medaled for the Panthers with his fifth place long jump of 18’2.5”. “It was really an awesome night for boys track,” head coach Jeff Andrews said. “[The] team had a great showing … earning medals in nearly every event for the top times in the league. It was a night of many personal bests and outstanding performances.” The Panthers now turn their attention to the Division II State Championships on Thursday at the Reggie Lewis Center. |
