| Devlin and Feeney help Panthers get revenge on Hingham to stay in banner picture |

The Hingham Harbormen wanted the ball out of the hands of Dondre James and Alex Nuby in critical moments of their game against the Panthers at the high school on Friday.
They got their wish, but they also got Shane Devlin. Devlin drilled a 3-pointer with 7.8 seconds to play in the first half after Hingham had rallied to take the lead, and Devlin then hit three straight 3’s in the fourth quarter in a two-minute stretch that helped the Panthers beat the Harbormen 73-62 for their fourth straight win. After the Panthers had fattened a seven-point lead at the end of the third quarter to 14 midway through the fourth, Hingham had scored seven points in less than a minute to cut the lead in half. Then Devlin set up shop in the left corner, and the Panthers found him open on three straight trips up the court to put the game away. While those three shots where crucial for the Panthers, the 3 in the final seconds of the first half was his biggest of the night. After starting the game on fire shooting the ball, only Brian Feeney was able to score for the Panthers in the second quarter while Hingham fought back to take a one-point lead with less than a minute to play. Devlin then got open at the top of the arc and didn’t miss, send the Panthers into the locker room ahead by two. The Panthers never trailed again. “Of all the 3’s he hit I think, that was the biggest one,” head coach Bob Rodgers said. “We had the momentum the whole first half and then we went in a little bit of a lull, and they were going to have such a big high and that deflated them a little bit. Then those three at the end were the daggers.” While Devlin hit the dramatic shots, Feeney’s seven points in the second quarter kept the Panthers in the game with the rest of the team going cold. The sophomore point guard had a hot hand throughout the game to lead all scorers with a career-high 20 points. “At times you are just in amazement at some of the things he can do,” Rodgers said. “He’s still maturing as a player and sometimes doesn’t run the offense as well as we would like, but he can really take over a game. He’s a special player.” The game started out much like the first game, with the Panthers jumping out in front while Hingham began to creep back. A steal and layup by James gave the Panthers a 12-point lead halfway through the first quarter, but Hingham cut it to five by the buzzer and continued to chip away in the second quarter before Devlin’s 3. James and Nuby found their shooting touches again in the third quarter to help the Panthers go back ahead by 10 before Hingham again rallied to close the frame down 46-39 and continued to close the gap until Devlin’s 3-point spree. Hingham got the lead down to single digits again with 1:10 to play, but that would be as close as they would get. With the win, the Panthers avenged an opening day loss to the Harbormen that was marred by a high turnover count and poor rebounding by Whitman-Hanson. The Panthers rectified both problems in the win, outrebounding HIngham 31-17, including 11-3 in the fourth quarter, and cutting their turnover count nearly in half. “We’re a much different team than we were on day one,” Rodgers said. “I think the biggest thing that is different is how we’re rebounding. We’ve had five games in a row now where we’ve out rebounded our opponents, and that’s really been the key.” The win was also the third straight for the Panthers against a Keenan Division rival, which keeps them in the chase for a league championship banner. For a shot at the title, the Panthers will likely need to sweep their final three games against division opponents, beginning Friday when the team hosts the Silver Lake Lakers. |
