Things are starting to click for the Whitman-Hanson/Pembroke girls hockey team, now it’s just a matter of consistency.
WHP picked beat the Marshfield Rams 5-3 on Jan. 25 to pick up their second win of the season, but fell 8-1 to Falmouth the next day and then lost 7-2 to the Sandwich Blue Knights at the Bridgewater Ice Arena on Saturday. The team put together a strong first period against the Blue Knights on Saturday, but fell apart in the second when Sandwich scored four goals on 11 shots to take a 6-1 lead into the third. WHP rebounded with a good third period, but the damage was already done. “We had good periods of hockey and a mental lapse,” head coach Joe Coulter said. “But they’re doing a lot of little things right, and we’re clicking but we’re one step off.” Sophomore Jane Morrisette gave WHP a 1-0 lead with a wrap around goal 2:08 into the game, but Sandwich scored twice in less than a minute to take a 2-1 lead into the break. The Knights tied the game on a rebound goal by captain Kristen Levesque at the 8:56 mark and then Caitlin Cooney finished a three-on-one breakaway 49 seconds later to take the lead. The Knights continued to score in bunches in the second period when Katie Flynn sent a slap shot off Mel Hatch’s glove and into the net at the 10-minute mark and Maggie Layo followed with a goal 24 seconds later. Layo added a power-play goal with 2:36 left to play in the period, and Flynn scored on a breakaway in the final minute to run the Sandwich lead to five. The WHP defense was hurt by injuries to Kristen Miglietta and Kerry Coady, while Ali McLeod had to miss the game to take the SATs on Saturday, but Coulter was happy with the effort by the remaining defenders against a veteran Sandwich offense. “We’re missing three key players,” he said. “It is what it is, and I was really pleased.” Sandwich’s senior goalie Maggie O’Connell held WHP in check for most of the game, but Sophia Nogueira broke through on a breakaway in the third period for WHP’s second goal. Nogueira and Morrisette’s goals in the game are the only scores surrendered by O’Connell in five games this season. “Sophie had a great goal,” Coulter said. “That was a lot of hustle and good work and a great shot. And Jane’s nice little wraparound which was really good. I was pleased with the offense, we just need to get a little more aggressive around the net.” Flynn scored the final goal of the game for Sandwich to pick up the hat trick with 4:22 left to play. Morrisette had a hat trick of her own on Wednesday to lead WHP to victory over the Rams. She scored in the first period on another wrap around before beating Taylor Newcomb with a top-shelf wrister and picking up her third goal with another wrap around. Captain Kelsey Murray and assistant captain Jackie Sullivan provided the other goals for WHP while the team got strong defense from Paige Carswell, Maddy Reardon, Giana Deacetis and MacLeod to complement Hatch in net. “It was a great team effort,” Coulter said. “A great game by Melissa Hatch in the net, she came up big with some great saves. Outstanding offensive play and great backchecking [by the forwards] and defensive play [was] key in keeping the Marshfield attack at bay.” WHP will be on the road Saturday when they board the ferry for a game on Martha’s Vineyard. |
