| Three records for girls track |

The goal for the Whitman-Hanson girls track team at the Division II State Relays on Sunday at the Reggie Lewis Center was to get the whole team involved by putting as many different runners in events as possible, even if it meant leaving points on the track.
The Panthers were able to do that and shatter a few records in the process. The Whitman-Hanson distance medley team broke the Division II relay record by more than five seconds while the long jump and 4x50-yard dash teams both set new school records as the Panthers left with two medals. “It was a great day,” head coach Mike Driscoll said. “It took a while to get going, but then as the dash was breaking the school record [on the infield,] the distance medley team was on the track breaking the state record, so that was a nice thing.” The team of juniors Gianna Cacciatore, Mel Collins, Abby Baker and Rachael Baker ran the distance medley (1,200 meters, 400 meters, 800 meters and 1,600 meters) in 12 minutes, 33.3 seconds to take first place and break the old D-II record of 12:38.46 set in 2008 by Marlborough High School. Collins set a new personal mark in the 400 during the relay while Rachael Baker ran her fastest 1,600 of the season, but the class record was only the starting point for the four juniors, who ran the distance medley at the Indoor Nationals last year and expect to be faster by the end of the season. “We came in today just to see how we could do,” Cacciatore said. “We’ve run a lot faster before and we can definitely go to Nationals with it.” Collins took home another medal and record on the day when she started the meet by teaming with Nicole Galewski and Danielle Spivack to jump a combined 44 feet, .75 inches in the long jump to place fourth and break the Whitman-Hanson school record. “Both those teams did really well,” Driscoll said. “Those were the two teams we expected to place, and they were able to do that.” The long jump and distance medley events earned the Panthers their only medals of the day, but the team broke another school record at the relays when Galewski, Spivack, Paulette Iannone and Lily Higgins tied for eighth in the shuttle dash in 25.89 seconds. The Panthers’ 4x200 team also placed in the top 10 in a meet that saw many of the younger Panthers get some state-level exposure for the first time. “We’re still working on our conditioning at this point, so we decided to spread everybody out,” “We got good performances from everyone who came. No one team didn’t hit their seed time, so that is pretty good too.” The Panthers have a two-week layoff before they return to Reggie Lewis for their final dual meet of the winter against Hingham on Jan. 31. The Panthers will then compete at the All-Patriot League meet before setting their sights on a big finish at the Division II State Championships. “We expect to do well there this year,” Driscoll said. |
