The first week of 2012 was a good one for the Whitman-Hanson boys track team. The Panthers got their fourth win of the season in impressive fashion with a 50-point win over the Silver Lake Lakers Wednesday and followed up with several personal bests by the team’s underclassmen at the Red Auerbach freshmen/sophomore Invitational on Saturday at the Reggie Lewis Center.
The largest field ever at the Auerbach meet did not faze the Panthers as Anthony Caliri, Stephen Stephansky, Brian Sheppard, Nate Almeida and Pat Brett all set new personal best marks on the track. Brett improved on his two-mile time by nearly 20 seconds to finish in 11:40, while Stephansky ran the 600 meters in 1:35.5 and Caliri posted a 43.6-second time in the 300. Sheppard and Almeida ran the mile in 5:17 and 5:28 respectively. The Panthers also had a strong showing in the field events with Jake Roumanos throwing 35-feet in the shot put and Justin Hall tossing 28’8”. Ricky Schneider and Darren Bickle also had good days in two events with Schneider jumping 17’1” in the long jump and running the 55-meter dash in 7.55 seconds and Bickle jumping 16’3” and running a 43.2-second 300. “The boys’ track team had a spectacular day,” head coach Jeff Andrews said. “”The Panthers came ready to compete and were not intimidated by the huge field of athletes. In fact, Whitman-Hanson athletes ran, jumped, and threw for personal bests across the board all day long.” The Panthers also recorded a few personal bests in their 75-25 win over the Lakers on Jan. 4. Senior Anthony Iannone set a new personal mark of 8.43 seconds in the 55-meter hurdles, followed by Steve Croghan, who also set a new personal best. Seniors Dom Cacciatore and Pat Ryan won two events apiece for the Panthers at the meet. Cacciatore took first in the 300 with a 37.8-second time while also winning the 55-meter dash in 7.03 seconds while Ryan won both the mile and two-mile with times of 4:43 and 10:09. The Panthers also got a first place finish from Brian Chapman in the long jump and strong runs from Mike Reimer and Dylan Foureau in the 1,000 and 600 meters. The Panthers will face the Pembroke Titans at Reggie Lewis on Wednesday as they get set for the Division II State Relays on Sunday. |
