Nuby’s buzzer-beater helps Panthers past Quincy in OT
By Dave Palana
Wednesday, January 11, 2012 11:15 AM

The Whitman-Hanson boys basketball team got a clutch shot from their senior captain and big game from one of their underclassmen to get their second overtime win of the season.

Alex Nuby drained a 3- pointer with no time left in regulation to pull the Panthers even with the Quincy Presidents, and sophomore Zach Downey scored five points in overtime to lead the Panthers to a 69-66 win in Quincy.

Downey scored 21 points, all in the second half and overtime, to lead the Panthers while junior Dondre James and sophomore Shane Devlin each added 12.

With the win, the Panthers improved to 3-4 overall and 2-2 in the league after dipping below .500 with a 58-56 loss to the Middleboro Sachems on Friday.

Two 3-pointers by Devlin gave the Panthers a one-point lead going into the fourth quarter, but Whitman-Hanson missed their first five shots of the quarter and struggled rebounding at both ends to allow the Sachems to go back in front by six.

The Panthers cut the lead to one point on a three by James with 22.4 seconds to play, but a costly turnover on an inbounds play prevented them from taking the lead.

“We just aren’t playing team basketball, and that is really the bottom line,” head coach Bob Rodgers said after the loss. “We don’t rebound aggressively, we don’t handle the ball well and we just don’t execute.”

The Panthers will try to get back over .500 on the road Thursday when they play the Silver Lake Lakers.
