| Boys hockey snaps losing streak |

The Whitman-Hanson boys hockey team let a game get away from them on against the Silver Lake Lakers on Jan. 4., and were determined not to let the same thing happen Saturday in Quincy.
Chris Boussy and Charlie Murphy scored in the final four minutes of the third period to help the Panthers end their six-game losing streak with a 3-1 over the Quincy Presidents. Whitman-Hanson took the lead in the first two minutes of the game on a goal by Nick Pike, but the Presidents tied the game in the second period before Boussy gave the Panthers the lead for good with four minutes to play in the third. Murphy added some insurance one minute later as both he and Boussy finished with a goal and two assists while Pike also had an assist to go with his goal. “All three goals came from our top line and all in the same fashion,” head coach Rich Manning said. “Guys going to the net with the puck and line mates supporting them and finding rebounds.” Manning was also pleased with the play of Ryan Small in his first varsity start in net. Small made 17 saves to get the win and surrendered just the one goal on a rebound in the second. “He looked poised all night,” Manning said. “[And defensively,] we did a nice job all night of limiting them to just bad angle, long distance shots.” While Manning was glad to see the team get their second win, he said they still need to work on capitalizing in the offensive zone, which was a problem for the Panthers in their loss to the Lakers on Jan. 4. Chris Ryan scored his fourth goal of the season and Zack Burke scored his first to help the Panthers erase a 2-0 Silver Lake lead in the second period, but the Panthers came up empty on several quality scoring chances. “[We had] four or five chances in close, just us and Silver Lake goalie and zero goals,” Manning said. “We weren't opportunistic on offense.” The Panthers were also hurt by three penalties in the third period that lead to two of the four Laker goals that broke the game open in the third period. “We did a nice job of coming back from 2-0 and giving ourselves a shot in the third, but we were far from good in all phases of the game from that point on,” Manning said. The Panthers will be looking for their second straight win Jan. 11 when they host the Hanover Indians at Rockland Rink before traveling to Kingston on Saturday to play the Duxbury Dragons at The Bog. |
