| Lady Panthers top Quincy Presidents in overtime |

The Whitman-Hanson girls basketball team remained unbeaten in the Patriot League Tuesday night at the high school, and may have turned a major corner in their season according to head coach Jim Daley.
The Panthers overcame a rocky fourth quarter to shut out the Quincy Presidents in overtime for a 47-40 win. It was the second straight win, fifth overall, for the Panthers, who beat the Middleboro Sachems on Friday, but Daley said the victory over the Presidents was the best win of the season for his team, which turned up its intensity in practice earlier in the week. “All the good things that happened in this game came from yesterday’s practice,” Daley said. “All the kids who don’t play busted their butts so they could have a sense of what we’re going up against. Everybody went after it in practice, and this was the best team win in recent memory. I can’t tell you about how over-the-top excited I am.” The Panthers took a two-point lead into halftime and ran it to 10, 33-23, by the end of the third quarter, but turnovers and foul trouble allowed Quincy to climb back into the game and pull even with less than two minutes to go. Freshman forward Erin Clifford gave the Panthers the lead with 15.5 seconds left in regulation, but Kelley MacDonald answered with two of her game-high 22 points at the other end with five seconds to play to force overtime. Senior Brittney Porter put the Panthers on the board with a jumper early in overtime, and Cassie Chernicki followed with a 3-pointer on the Panthers’ next trip up the court to give Whitman-Hanson a two-possession lead, and Mackenzie Hatfield sealed the win with a pair of free throws. “We could have really melted down after giving up that lead,” Daley said. “But we just got ourselves organized, got that first score which was big and then Cassie hit a big shot.” Chernicki led the Panthers with 15 points in the game while Porter added 10. Clifford also scored 10 points, including seven in the second quarter to help the Panthers erase a 12-7 Quincy lead at the end of the first quarter. “When they were hitting threes early, we just stayed the course,” Daley said. “I hope the kids take confidence from this.” Chernicki was also the Panthers’ leading scorer on Friday with 11 points when they beat the Sachems 60-32 in Middleboro. Hatfield had nine points to go with six assists while Porter also scored nine to go with eight rebounds. The Panthers will look to keep their undefeated league record intact Thursday when they host the Silver Lake Lakers at the high school. |
