In their first dual meet of the new year, the Whitman-Hanson girls track team picked up right where they left off in 2011.
The Panthers won all but one event and swept four in their 83-16 win over the Silver Lake Lakers at the Reggie Lewis Center on Jan. 4. The Panthers had two weeks between meets due to the holiday break, but head coach Mike Driscoll said the team showed no rust when they returned to competition. “The girls are really rounding into great shape; we had some great performances after having some time off,” Driscoll said. “This team comes to work every day and that is exciting to see as a coach.” Junior Nicole Galewski won two events for Whitman-Hanson, leading a team sweep in the 55-meter dash with an 8-second time and also taking first in the long jump at 15 feet, 2 inches. Fellow juniors Rachael Baker, Abby Baker, Gianna Cacciatore, Mel Collins and Sam Richner also took first places at the meet. Cacciatore led a sweep of the 600 meters with a 1:43 time, Abby Baker won the 1,000 in 3:06 and Rachael Baker took first in the mile in 5:26. On the infield, Richner took first in the high jump by clearing 4’11” and Collins won the 55-meter hurdles in 9:86. Freshman Caroline Mulrey helped the Panthers take first in all the distance events by winning the two-mile in 12:23 while sophomore Haley Wells led a Panther sweep of the 300 meters in 45.1 seconds. Danielle Spivak and Haley Bukow completed the sweep of the 300 while Paulette Iannone and Lily Higgins finished behind Galewski in the dash. Hannah Wells and Melissa Peck backed up Cacciatore in the 600 and Casey Egan and Julia Donovan finished second and third behind Baker in the mile. The Panthers face the Pembroke Titans at the Reggie Lewis Center Jan. 11 in their final dual meet in the run-up to Sunday’s Division II State Relays, where Driscoll expects the Panthers to compete in several events. “We have the relays coming up so we are really focusing on putting in some good performances [against Pembroke],” he said. |
