Most Valuable Player:
Sean Goldman - Golf: Goldman was the top golfer all season for the Panthers, captaining the golf team to their second straight appearance in the MIAA tournament and an 8-3 regular season, the best mark ever by a Panther golf team. Goldman also shot a 78 at the South Sectionals, just missing the cut for the state championship. Lauren Clark - Soccer: Clark had a solid regular season in net for the Panthers, but really came up big in the South Sectionals for Whitman-Hanson. Clark helped the Panthers emerge victorious in two shootouts against Plymouth North and Dartmouth, and turned in her best performance of the playoffs against the Marshfield Rams to help the Panthers reach the South Sectional finals. Rookie of the Year: Stephen Smart - Cross-Country: Smart turned in a strong sophomore season for the Panthers to help them repeat as the Patriot League Keenan Division champions and finish second at the Eastern Mass Championships for the second year in a row. Smart was a solid number seven and will play a bigger role next year for Whitman-Hanson. Kelsey Tierney - Cross-Country: Tierney was a Patriot League all-star as a freshman this season and the number four runner when the Panthers won the Eastern Mass. Championship. She then ran a career best time at the All State meet to help the Panthers to their first All-State championship. Player to Watch in 2011: Jeff Bechen - Football: For a backup quarterback, Bechen saw a lot of snaps as a junior this season, but didn’t do much throwing as the Panthers used him largely for option runs. Bechen will have plenty of talent around him next season with receivers Dondre James and Tom Sapienza and running backs Jerry and Mario Thompson as he looks to lead the Panthers up the Patriot League ladder. Yasemin Civan - Soccer: The Panthers will have the bulk of their defense back next season, but will lose a lot of offense with seniors Cassie Chernicki, Mackenzie Hatfield and Devon Morse, which will make Civan an even bigger part of the team’s offensive strategy. Civan scored two goals in the team’s playoff win over Dartmouth, and will have to produce again up top for the Panthers to return to the tournament in 2012. |
