Elaine M. Foster, 62
Monday, August 08, 2011 03:06 PM

Elaine M. “Grammie” (O’Rourke) Foster, 62, died Saturday, Aug. 6 in South Shore Hospital surrounded by her family after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born and raised in Cambridge she was the daughter of the late Thomas J. and Mary A. (Colbert) O’Rourke and a graduate of Cambridge Rindge & Latin High School.

Elaine was a longtime and active resident of Whitman having settled here in 1983.  Over the 28 years as a resident of Whitman, she had held multiple positions for the town. She was a familiar face, “rain or shine,” as the Route 27 crossing guard at the Middle School for more than 25 years, and had also worked delivering Meals on Wheels to the elderly. Most recently she had served on the Board of Registrars and was seen checking at the polls of each and every election held by the town.

She leaves her four  sons Clifford Foster and his wife Karen of Middleboro, Joseph Foster and his wife Luz of Halifax, Michael Foster and his wife Carisa of Bridgewater, and Steven Foster and his wife Pam of Hanson, her siblings Thomas O’Rourke of Malden, Lorraine Mattson of Burlington, and Kevin O’Rourke of Bedford.  She is also survived by, and will be sorely missed by, her five grandchildren whom she adored Nicholas, Ryan, Addison, Tyler and Zachary as well as many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Gerard, Jack and Patty O’Rourke.

Family and friends are invited to attend her visiting hours to be held from 4-8 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 11 in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel Plymouth Street (Rt. 58 at the rotary) Whitman. Graveside services will be heldat a later date.

In lieu of flowers donations in her name may be made to Journey of Hope – Cancer Care @ South Shore Hospital, 55 Fogg Road, S. Weymouth, MA 02190 or at southshorehospital.org.
