It’s still early in the game, but the selectmen’s race is shaping up.
Nomination papers for the May 15 Annual Town Election are now available. Town offices that will appear on the ballot are two selectmen for three years, now held by incumbent Brian J. Bezanson, who has taken out papers, and Margaret C. McGillivray, who has taken out papers. Joseph Balonis and Nicholas Stead have also taken out papers for the three-year term. One selectman for one year, will be elected to fill a vacancy; papers were taken out by John Lunnin. Lunnin said he is running because it is the same seat he had hoped to win two years ago. Chairman of the Board of Selectmen Carl Kowalski said the selectmen open seats are essential to fill. He said it is important for citizens who have not run for office to get involved. He added that running for one of the one year terms to fill vacancies on the Planning Board and Board of Selectmen are a great way for residents to get their feet wet, and see if they like the position. Assessor Jean Bumpus is up for reelection. She has taken out papers and may be challenged by Patricia Pearce and Carol O’Brien, who have also taken out papers. Other seats that are open: • Two PK-12 Whitman-Hanson Regional School District Committee members for three years, now held by Michael J. Kryzanek and Robert C. Trotta, who has taken out papers. • Two Department of Public Works Commissioners for three years, now held by Ronald J. Delmonico, who has taken out papers and Kevin T. Cleary, who has also taken out papers. • Two Public Library Trustees for three years,; now held by Patricia L. Goldmann, who announced she will not be seeking candidacy this year and Grace L. Nelson. • One Whitman Housing Authority member for five years now held by Thomas A. Richard. • One Planning Board member for five years, now held by Peter R. Palaza. • One Planning Board member for one year to fill vacancy. • One Board of Health member for three years, now held by John H. Duval.
