Four men are competing for one seat on the Board of Selectmen in Whitman. Joseph Balonis, Nicholas Stead and Richard Cole are running against incumbent Daniel Salvucci. Salvucci has been on the Board of Selectmen since 2003 and this will be his third time running for election. Before becoming a selectman, Salvucci was the chairman of the Finance Committee for five years. If Salvucci is reappointed he said he would like to keep the town of Whitman’s finances as secure as it has. “We’re in better shape than other surrounding towns,” he said. Salvucci is on the Plymouth County Advisory Board, MBTA Advisorory Board,South Shore Vocational Technical School Committee, Old Colony Planning Council Joint Transportation Committee and Metropolitan Planning Organization and the casino and power plant committees. “The reason I am on all these committees is because I am retired and a firm believer that a member of the board should be on all these committees to keep Whitman apprised of any issues,” he said. Incumbent Christopher Powers is facing a challenge from William Egan Jr. and William Winaskas for his seat on the Whitman-Hanson Regional School Committee. There is also a contested race between Katharine Kelleher and Francis Silva for the five-year term for the Whitman Housing Authority. Whitman has candidates for every office. “Hopefully we will get people out to vote,” Town Clerk Pamela Martin said. “There are over 9,000 registered voters so we are hoping for a decent turnout.” For residents who wish to register to vote they have until 8 p.m. on April 14. Anyone out of town can apply for an absentee ballot, Martin said. All precincts will be voting during the election at the Town Hall on May 16. Polls will be open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
