Working out for a good cause

Cynergy Training is hosting a Work out of the Day for athletes to support the fundraising efforts of New Leaders Institute, a non-profit youth leadership program on Saturday, Nov. 8.

Cynergy Training is asking the community to help make this leadership program possible for all kids.

Owner of Cynergy Training Cynthia Brown took a leadership class in California and as a part of her assignment she was to use her training to promote leadership.

“The plan is for the program to be at the end of April during the school vacation week,” said Brown. “The problem with the workshop is there are a lot of low income kids and there is an application process. We found that many people who applied on the West Coast didn’t have money for the program.”

The program can cost up to $500 per student, said Brown.

Sign-ups for the fundraising Workout of the Day can be done at cynergytraining.com. It costs $25 to register before Nov. 8 and $50 to register the day of the event. Registration begins at 8 a.m. at Cynergy Training Studio on Commercial Waye in Hanson.

Cynergy Training has already raised $2,500 for the New Leaders programs.

“We pushed to try to find a way for kids to do the program,” said Brown. “One hundred percent of the money raised will go toward the non-profit.”

The fundraising event will be much like the training business challenges Cynergy has each month, she said.

The intent of the challenges is to get you in the best shape of your life, said Brown. Invaluable life skills such as determination, discipline and respect also are taught.

The goal of cross-fitness training is to improve fitness from start to finish, said Brown.

The Whitman Fire Department participated in Cynergy’s “How Fit is your Force” Challenge back in March. They won the award for best team. Competitors from Whitman Fire included: Thomas Ford, Timothy Grenno, John Norton, Josef Kenealy, Michael MacCurtain and Pat Travers.

The goal of the competition was for the first responders to become physically fit, therefore providing better service to those who depend on them.

For the fundraiser challenge the participants will run in heats, said Brown. There are eight people per heat and the number of heats depend on the people. The “hopper event” will have 10 different exercises offered, individuals will choose four at random. Individuals will then do 10 reps of each exercise and as many rounds as they can in 20 minutes.

“Anybody can participate no matter what fitness level,” said Brown. “The point is to do what they can.”

Other ways people can help other than participating in the challenge is buying raffle tickets or by donating money. There are also donated T-shirts available to purchase.

The leadership program will be open to students in eighth grade up to freshmen in college.

Cynergy will be getting the word out through the high schools, not only the traditional high schools but also the alternative high schools, said Brown. “They have to really want to learn leadership skills.”

The course will consist of 21 students and if there is a demand more classes will be added.

When the student completes the course they go on to choose a leadership project.

“This will be the first time we will have a class here,” said Brown.

The New Leaders program offers life skills, communication skills, listening skills, team building skills, support and ongoing mentoring and coaching.

The mission is to inspire innovative leaders with the knowledge to lead and contribute to their communities, said Brown.

The Work Out of the Day is open to everyone, so bring your friends, co-workers and family members and join them for an incredible day.  There will be a potluck lunch afterwards and raffles of gifts and prizes.

Many people have already donated food and water to the event.

Anyone going to the fundraiser is encouraged to bring a canned food that will be donated to the Hanson Food Pantry for the holidays.
