Candidate forum held

The Hanson Democratic and Republican Committee held their annual election forum Sunday.

Water Commissioner Mary Lou Sutter is running for re-election. She explained what the Water Department hopes to accomplish. One of the articles that the Water Department had for the special Town Meeting was to replace water mains which stretch for 71 miles throughout the system.

“This is one part of what the $19 million would have to go to. That doesn’t count the fact our water tower will have to get cleaned sometime in the near future,” she said. To clean the water tower would cost $500,000-$600,000, she said.

Water Commissioner Bruce Young is also running for re-election unopposed.

Young said that the 71 miles of piping under Hanson needs to be constantly maintained, along with the tower and four wells.

“They need to be maintained and tested to meet the Department of Environmental Protection’s standards,” he said.

Constable August Silva is running unopposed for re-election.

“I will continue to follow the duties I have had for the last 40 years,” he said. As constable, Silva posts warrants for the annual Town Meeting and special Town Meeting and also serves legal matters from inside the town.

“When I accept the duties I do it in a timely manner,” he said.

Thomas Powers, a member of the Hanson Housing Authority, is running for re-election against Teresa Santalucia.

Powers has been on the Housing Authority for a year. He decided to run for the position because he felt that someone who lived on Meetinghouse Lane should be on the board.

“The last year up at the housing complex I was responsible for getting the doors painted inside and out,” he said. He was able to enlist the Sheriff’s Department to do the work.

“All that cost us was lunch money,” he said.

During his year on the Housing Authority, they also upgraded the septic systems with a state grant.

Teresa Santalucia has been involved in affordable housing for over a decade.

She was an emergency assistant and more recently as attorney with expertise in housing affordability.

“I am familiar with the monetary challenges they face,” she said. “I’d like to give back to the town. I think my experience will lend itself to the town.”

If elected, she would look to continue to support the housing that already exists in town.

“I think with long term planning, affordable housing can be in addition to support of housing we already have and also play a lead role in the developing of the former Plymouth  County Hospital,” she said.

“I’d like to see that space be utilized in the town. I know there are a lot of individuals in the town working on that.”

Incumbent Richard Edgehille is running for re-election. Edgehille has lived in Hanson since 1966. He served in the United States Navy for four years. During the past six years he has taken several courses in the health service topics including Title V, Waste reduction and sewerage disposal.

He is a member of Mass Association of Health Boards, Mass Health Officers Association and Mass Environmental Health Association.

“I am always educating myself on the Board of Health,  and there is always something to learn,” Edgehille said.

Ellen Burke is running in opposition to Edgehille. She has lived in town since 1988.

Burke has a bachelors of science from Simmons College and has been a registered nurse for 40 years, working in the public health fields.

“I have experience working closely with the Visiting Nurse Association and Board of Health,” she said.  “I have been a very active volunteer in the Duxbury Military Reserve Corps as the chief of operations for the town of Hanson,” she said.

Burke attends the Duxbury Military Emergency Reserve Corps meetings and all the training sessions.

“Emergency preparedness takes place in close conjunction with the Board of Health,” Burke said. “I think I would make a good member because of my medical knowledge and ability to bring my knowledge of emergency readiness to the job.”

Selectmen Stephen Amico and Donald Howard are running unopposed for re-election.

Amico has been a resident of Hanson since 1984. He has served on the Whitman-Hanson Regional School Committee and the Hanson Finance Committee. He is involved in many Hanson sports, including Hanson Youth Basketball.

“I’ve learned a lot on the Board of Selectmen so far, and there is a lot to learn. “It has been a tough year and there have been a lot of tough things the board has gotten through,” he said.

Howard has been a Hanson resident since 1948. He has served on the Board of Health for a number of years in the late 60 and 70s.

“I enjoy being a selectman. When I was on the Board of Health I didn’t have the time to devote to the town and two years ago I did retire.”

The election will take place at 10 a.m. at the Maquan Elementary School.
