Fishin' Column
By Mikaela Slaney

HOT SPOT OF THE WEEK:  Peaked Hill Bar. There is a hot bite going on for tuna, with many in the recreational keeper range of 47 to 59 inches, including many fish between 55 and 59 inches.

TIP OF THE WEEK:  Get away from all the boat traffic (they are pushing the tuna down). Watch the birds – they can see the tuna chasing bait.

COASTAL REPORT:  Right now, Peaked Hill Bar is hot with lots of tuna action. There are many tuna here and fishing is nothing but hot. Most of the fish are coming on black Hotjigs squid bars being trolled way-way back. The fish are very boat shy now. The next best color squid bar is bubble gum. Over at the backside beaches bass fishing is very slow at best (where are all the stripers?). Large jumbo bluefish are almost everywhere but no stripers. From the backside beaches to the Race at Provincetown, your best bet is to fish for bluefish.

This area also has a large population of gray seals. The seals will try to steal your live bait or will bite off the fish on your line.

Over in the Plymouth and Duxbury Bay area fishing is also slow. Lots of bluefish, but if you use some live bait and fish after dark you have a much better chance of catching a trophy striper. Flounder fishing is still good, but the hot weather has stopped most of the anglers from targeting flounder. Try early morning hours in the Cordage Channel before the sun gets too hot. There are many schools of small stripers and bluefish. Try casting some top water plugs or some of the 6.5 inch Shankas in bubble gum color. Over in Green Harbor, just outside the jetties at the red can flounder fishing is good – lots of nice size flounder but sometimes the boat traffic gets heavy. In the Farnham Rock area you can jig up some harbor pollack to use for tuna bait, but the striper action is very slow.

Over in the Rexhame area in 60 to 70 feet of water there are some blues in the 15 pound range. Rapallas on wire line are the hot setup here. In 50 to 90 feet of water off the entrance can to the North River there are some mackerel still around. Live lining the mackerel around 4th Cliff seems to be about the only place to get some keeper size stripers – some in the 20 pound range. Umbrella rigs with lead core line are producing some small keeper bass around 3rd and 4th Cliffs.

SPECIAL NOTE:  Where are all the stripers? Not since the early 80’s have I seen striper fishing this poor.
