Pembroke's fishing column

HOT SPOT OF THE WEEK:  Peaked Hill Bar. Lots of Giants and plenty of Stripers.

TIP OF THE WEEK:  If  you’re going tuna fishing, make sure you have plenty of live baits. Lots of dog fish and jumbo bluefish have moved into the area. Bring your ‘A’ game – fish are hungry.

COASTAL REPORT:  It’s very hard to find any mackerel for live bait. Most of them have moved north due to an influx of bluefish and warming water temperatures. But in Duxbury and Plymouth Bays there are schools of pogies. Some pollock can be jigged up and used for tuna bait, but pogies are now the number one bait. Mostly pogies on a kite are the hottest way to fish, but live pogies on a plastic water bottle will work, especially if there is no wind to work a kite. Watch for the new menace gray seals – they will come right up to the boat and take a live bait. There have also been some reports of the seals cutting off squid bars. Wow that hurts!

The bite at Peaked Hill Bar is really hot one day and stone cold the next. Up at the Race at Provincetown bass fishing has been good with plenty of keeper stripers up to 40 inches. Wire line jigging with Black and Purple or all Red jigs has been working well in the 25 to 40 foot water depth. Casting 10.5” Shankas in White Glow is also hot. Deep water vertical jigging in the 100 foot range is also good.

Over to Plymouth and Duxbury Bay fishing is still good with many nice striper catches. There are still some mackerel around along with some hickory shad and lots of pogies. Bug Light and Clark’s Island are some of the local hot spots but watch for feeding birds (they can see the fish). In Cordage Channel flounder fishing along with some fluke remains good. Fishing is good in most of the area. Bait is very abundant. Over in Green Harbor there are some nice stripers being caught all the way up to the dam. Jetty fishing has been good with eels being the choice of bait, but casting 6.5 inch Shankas in Bubblegum and White has also been producing a few keepers.

Just outside the harbor around the Red Can flounder fishing has been excellent with lots of nice keepers. Over at the North and South Rivers striper fishing remains good. The Third and Fourth Cliff areas are a couple of the better places to fish. Live bait is best but trolling umbrella rigs on lead-core line is also a good way to catch some keeper bass. Outside the mouth of the river at the entrance bell flounder fishing is really good but not many fishermen are targeting them. Most of the mackerel have moved up toward Boston where striper fishing is the best yet.
