Gone Fishin': Fish of a lifetime!
By Skip Cornell
Saturday, July 09, 2011 11:15 AM

Local businessmen Tom Pierce and Mike Barbour capture the fish of a lifetime!

HOT SPOT OF THE WEEK: Peaked Hill Bar for jumbo stripers and giant tuna fish!

TIP OF THE WEEK: Jig up live mackerel north of Farnham Rock to fish for stripers and giant tuna.

COASTAL REPORT: This week both striper and tuna fishing has broken wide open. Fishing is at its best so far this season and tuna fishing is Hot! Hot! Hot! And them some! Local business men Tom Pierce of Bongi’s Turkey Farm and Mike Barbour of Mike Barbour’s Auto Repair tied into a tuna that they battled for over three hours on Friday. This fish was fought on standup gear with no chair or swivel rod holder! The ‘guesstimated’ weight of the fish was near 900 pounds and over 95 inches long.  What a fish!  A big Ya-Hoo! for these guys.  What a great job.

Over at Peaked Hill Bar the striper and tuna fishing is fantastic now. Many, many battles are going on with giant tuna – and don’t forget that striper action is also red hot. Fish are being fooled by live mackerel and pogies, but trolling squid bars and daisy chains or casting plugs are also working. Tuna schools are mixed with many smaller fish mixed in. The smaller fish at 27 to 59 inches are just what the recreational angler needs to be able to keep a tuna. Stripers up to 50 pounds are chasing live baits and squid bars. There is also a large mix of whales in the area – be careful! The southwest corner of Stellwagen also has a good tuna bite. Over at the Race at Provincetown to the Bath House area in 25 to 40 feet of water striper action is real good – lots of keepers up to 35 to 40 inches with some jumbo bluefish mixed in.

At the Plymouth-Duxbury Bay area fishing is really good too. Outside at the entrance bell you can use Sibiki Rigs to jig up some pollock or mackerel for live bait. Most anywhere inside Plymouth or Duxbury Bay is good. Try Browns Bank, Bug Light, Clark’s Island, the Cordage Channel or the mouth of the Jone’s River. Flounder fishing is also good, but not many anglers are targeting them. Best spots are at the Cordage Channel. Over at Green Harbor fishing from the jetties is good – live baits and eels are working well. At Farnham’s Rock there are lots of mackerel around and some pollock to use for live bait. Bluefish Cove is also seeing some nice striper action.

Over at the North and South Rivers the striper action remains good. Jig up some mackerel in the deeper water off the mouth of the river  - 70 to 90 feet deep – and use them anywhere, Third and Fourth Cliffs are good, the estuary  of the South River or all the way up to Mary’s Boat Livery in the North River. Good luck – you should enjoy the best fishing of the season so far.
