From the front, their tee shirts say “Girls on The Go.” But from the back, the tee shirts let people know, “You just got passed by a girl.”At first, the women’s running and walking group was only available in Kingston. But founder Erin Brenton said it was such a hit, that she decided to bring it to Pembroke Sept 12. “We’re bringing it there because there’s such a need for it,” said Brenton, a Kingston resident, formerly of Pembroke. “When we kicked it off in Kingston last year I thought maybe 20 people would show up, and 100 people showed up on opening day.” Girls On The Go (GOTG) will offer certified fitness classes at the Rec. Department building, 128 Center Street, by three instructors. There will be Sculpting Class by Tara Mondays at 5 a.m. and Tuesdays at 8:30 a.m., Tabata Class (high impact interval training) Mondays at 9:30 a.m., Boot Camp by Margo Tuesdays at noon, Zumba Stay Lean with Kathleen, Wednesdays at 8:45 a.m. and Thursdays at 10:45 a.m., GOTG running and walking group by Brenton, Fridays at 9:30 a.m. in the Rec. Department parking lot. The walk and run will be a 3.1 trail around Pembroke, and the course will be marked. In 1982 Brenton was struck by a drunk driver, which took the life of her sister, Heather, who was 6. Brenton’s left foot was also partially severed in the accident, and she said if she, a mother at age 38 can be successful in a fitness routine, so can any adult woman. “People would see me running, and I said if I can do it anyone can,” she said. “It’s just a warm and inviting group of all these women that want to do it.” Brenton said GOTG also has an adult women’s softball team and two for women over 40 soccer teams. “All these women who thought they weren’t athletes in their 20s and teens, and now they are in their 30s and 40s, they’re coming back as better mothers, better wives, they’re losing all this weight and they’re feeling great about themselves,” she said. GOTG members have also run and walked in fundraising trails earning over $70,000 for charities, she said. To purchase a GOTG “jump pass” which is worth 10 meet visits, visit the Recreation Department. The passes never expire and participants are not locked into programs. To be put on a list for a free try out, email Benton at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Jump passes are $70 for Pembroke residents, and there is an additional charge of $5, which benefits the town, from non-residents. All checks should be made out to “the town of Pembroke” and jump passes are already available. The Recreation Department is available at 781-293-3249. |
